The Odd Lifts

Enjoy this article out of the CrossFit Journal. It covers fantastic movements from the past that are usually no longer in use other than in certain circles.

The Odd Lifts, by Greg Glassman - Jan 03

There are movements that will never make it to your local gym and they include some of the best exercises ever known. There is a collection of them known as "the odd lifts." It would be foolish to ignore these lifts. It would be even more foolish to approach them with other than extreme caution.

There are competitions with the odd lifts and they have an association - the United States All-Round Weightlifting Association (USAWA) The USAWA's web site covers the rules of the competitions and lifts.

We review the odd lifts with a mix of humor and awe. The humor is a juvenile humor because it finds its roots in the discomfort and injury of others – like kids' cartoons. Imagine the damage you could do with the Roman chair bench press alone. Or, how about the two-man clean and jerk?

Run-Squat WOD (Speal & Zac)...[wmv][mov]

WOD
"Runnin Squats"
4 rounds for time
400 meter run
50 Air Squats

Who can pull a sub 15 minutes? sub 12 minutes? What about below 10? At the same time how did your squats look? Were they all legit (complete lockout and hip below the knee)?

  2. Am I the only one that can see Paul attempting all of these Odd Lifts......
This could be dangerous (and fun!!) for rest days!

  4. The Hammi is not 100%, so that kept me from a best effort pace. The combo of running after squats really tightened it up, so I tried to focus on form over speed. 13+ minutes. On the upside, running is beginning to feel more natural in the barefoot shoes!

I PRd by 7 seconds but was really hoping to break 10 minutes this time. I did not break up any of the squats and my 400s felt really good. What a beautiful morning to be running outside.

    Congrats again Ricky and Crystal!

  8. Congrats Ricky and Crystal!!! Awesome news!!! :)

11:44 - didn't break up any sets and tried pose running on two of the 400 meters, which felt oddly pretty alright - - next time I will definitely push harder on the runs....

all I can say "GOOD MORNING 6AM PEEPS!!" I am happily enjoying my coffee at my desk right now ;)

  10. The Odd Lifts: I saw something that said the "one handed" - I stopped reading there - j/k - but anyways in regards to the article I think weighted situps would be awesome and some of those very entertaining....and I can only imagine trying to do something that is already difficult and coordinate it perfectly with another person! nuts! - reba

  12. Congrats Ricky and Crystal...I am so excited for you guys!!

I liked today's workout. Finished at 13:10, not sure if I have ever done that one before. I was a nice morning to run outside. I must admit I really like the 6am, who knew there were so many hours of free time AFTER 5!!

Interesting article, I should probably be able to do some of those things on my own before I try with another person....I could see a hospital visit if that happened :)

  18. Finished in 14:09. I was only able to do the first 2 runs because my shoulder just wouldn't quit throbbing, but I did get through all of the squats. That surgery can't get here fast enough.

    Congrats Crystal and Ricky!

  26. CONGRATS, CRYSTAL AND RICKY!!! this warms my heart.

not in the same way that the WOD did, though. 12:35. I couldn't breathe, so i subbed gasping for the breathing. otherwise, as RX'd.

  28. Oh, and PS, Ang--I'm not worried about TRYING these lifts--I'm worried about trying them when I got my krunk on, know what i'm sayin? there's a wedding coming up, too, and that's when i'm at highest risk.

  30. 12:07. My only break-up was to put my shoes back on. Pose is starting to feel much more comfortable than heel-strike.

  32. Today was a killer for me.... I am such a poor runner. I wish I had gone to the running lesson last week. I did make it in 18:20 so at least I didn't time out. I am amazed at how well everyone does and look forward to getting to that level someday! Baby steps.. I have to be able to get out of bed tomorrow morning first:)

  42. 12:00 as RX'd....(hee, hee - i'm taking advantage of being able to say that b/c it doesn't happen very often...i usually have to write SCALED)

    I liked this WOD.

AND, Congrats on what I think it is....

  44. 13:30 Rx'd, I was shooting for under 15 minutes so I was happy with my performance. I know I can run harder but that will come with time.

Ricky, I don't think I am going to have access to a gym at all over the weekend so if you could email me a couple workouts to do on Friday and Saturday that would be awesome. My email address is mdpetersen@gmail.com and I am taking a rest day tommorrow as well as Sunday so I will only need something for the other two days. Thanks!! See everyone on Monday!

Thanks For Visiting!
