Dr. Barry Sears insists that the
Zone Diet works for people suffering from type II diabetes and heart diseases. This is explicable in a way, because Zone Diet does not encourage excesses of any kind, apart from calorie limitation, of course. But the American Heart Association does not approve of the Zone diet. In its view, the Zone encourages consumption of meat protein, which could also contain fat, while it decreases carbohydrate intake.

So a few years ago, women were scared into purchasing "folate enriched" foods, ie. breads, cereals, crackers, etc. They were apparently risking birth defects by limiting carb-consumption. Are you kidding me? Nevermind the fact that you can get your folate in 2 cups of romaine, 1 cup cooked spinach and a variety of other lovely "real" foods. Spinach commercials just don't do it for consumers these days, and marketing is the driving force in grocery store economics.
Every dietician I have come across in the last 5 years has been touting the necessity of eating grain, be it whole or otherwise. And every single one of said dieticians has been on the verge of obesity.
I am fairly certain that the AHA and the typical dietician has missed the boat on the intricacies of a "low carb" diet. It's much easier to take the worst-case scenario of the obese individual who decides to eat an all-pork, all-the-time-diet, and look at their blood sugar levels in relation to coronary disease. Plus, don't kid yourselves, the government spends approx. 50-some million dollars on govt-run food programs for military, school, daycare, etc. It's much more difficult to stock those entities with fresh, whole foods, than it is to invest in grain-based products. A simple dose of reality is not the problem. It's the economics surrounding the issue that have created the monster. Can you imagine if, after all these years, the AHA had to come out issuing an apology, saying that they were incorrect in their research, beliefs, and opinions? It's never going to happen.
There may as well be a disclaimer at the bottom of the food pyramid, stating, "Sponsored by the Grain Council." I would at least respect the honesty.

second, i am not on the zone, but i have been working on eating a good proportion of protein to carbs, and almost no refined foods or sugars--especially lately. and in the last few months, i have noticed that my body HATES sugar. if i break down and eat candy, i get a headache and might even have a hangover the next day! the other day i got a headache i think had to come from a bottle of gatorade!
i'm not drawing any big conclusions from this--just an anecdote.

second, i also am not on the zone but have read quite a bit regarding the zone and paleo diets. For me its all about a good ratio of protein, good carbs and good fat at every meal. Unlike Paul, my body absolutely loves sugar and it has become a daily struggle to avoid all the sugary treats people bring to work and set out on their desks. I have been very happy with the results so far not only in body composition but also in my workouts. I have become a true believer in the importance of a good diet while working out.
Zone...started yesterday, hope to see some results. I can understand why so many people purchase processed food.....it is cheaper than the fresh stuff. I mean you almost have to make 6 digits to afford fresh fruits and veggies, ok that is an a bit extreme, but you know what I mean.
I really love nature's candy...pineapple, grapes, blackberries, strawberries, much more than skittles.
All I know is that I finally cut out diet pop from about 20 a week ( i know sickening, I loved diet dews) to about - well nothing. The other day, on Sunday I had one and it tasted horrible - so I only had about 1/4 the can! I think the body just adapts and starts to crave what we give it, so if we force ourselves into better habits, our bodies naturally adjust and crave those things - just my observation. I have not been strict with zone, but have done really well with the whole paleo thing and I love it!! Although I am starting to get the hang of blocks....
I want to barf when I see commercials on tv with little kids digging into a bowl of "whole grain enriched folate frosted cheerios" - - really?? and it really helps that little boy stay awake and alert in class?? yea right.
of course its easier to get processed foods. its not fun to get home from a long day and make a healthy dinner, but it is totally worth it! its fun to go into the store and only go into the aisles for toilet paper and buy everything else from the outside of the store.
wod: 7:42 but way scaled. i did the seated bench dips (tricep pushups)and only 96# because the rx'd was more than my 3 rep max. way to be 6am!
The things it's hard for me not to have too much of are those delicious fruits, alochol in its various glorious forms, and not-so-lean proteins, like ribs. I also get ridiculous chocolate and ice cream cravings sometimes.

There was some awesome intensity in the room today. Great job noon class!
and...i'm no good at the zone. i really have been trying, but it just wasn't enough food for me and i can't stand being hungry all of the time. i'm scared of slowing my metabolism if i lower the quantity of food intake too much. i still only buy groceries that are zone "approved", so the quality of food has definitly improved. i've never eaten so many veggies! my quantity has stayed about the same. even so, i really do feel like my energy has improved throughout the day.
We miss you! Great job on the workout. Hope all is well!

I was first introduced to The Zone when I was in my early teens. My mom wanted to do an experiment on me and see the results. I don't really even remember it, but she claims that there was a big difference. Since then I've been off and on measured food about a hundred times.
I'm currently in the second week of an "Off" session. Work has been busy and I haven't make the time to fix meals. Boy can I feel the difference! I'm run down, cranky and haven't been sleeping as well. I gotta get back on track!!
As far as dairy goes, I have a lot of success with plain yogurt mixed with berries for breakfast. The taste takes a little getting used to, but the berries go a long way to overcome the food aversion. I hate cottage cheese and don't really drink milk so it's about the only dairy that I consume. For non-meat protein I go for extra firm tofu. You have to eat a little more volume to get enough grams, but it's a nice break from chicken breast.
Enough rambling! I'll see you all soon.
No food+throwing up+1st WOD in 4 days= light headed and slow!
I started DL's at 142 and Joe took me down to something after the 21... This was not my best showing.
Looking forward to tomorrow!
