Event 1 for individuals being held at Santa Monica Pier and includes a 210 meter ocean swim, what are your thoughts?

Too much skill where an unfair advantage is given or a necessary component to find the true generalist?

Post answers to comments.

  4. I am a little confused about the programming so far. I am all for the swimming portion as it is a tough physical test that the fittest person alive should be able to pass. However, the running in the sand is more unfair. Only a small portion of the population have access to sand beaches to run on. If you do this on a regular basis you have such a huge advantage since you have already trained those specific muscles to be used to running in the sand. Almost 2 miles in the sand is a lot.

I am also a little afraid that the Games are going to turn in to a odd ball competition that has more and more of these sand bag moving events or obstacle courses or people carrying. What's next? Cat walks? Zip lines? Rock climbing? What about tree climbing? Tractor pulls? Keg tosses? I thought this was a competition to find the fittest person alive, or in other words, who can crush any workout anytime? Crossfit is slowly taking that to who can crush any physical feat. I like a bit of the different incorporated in the competition but any more than this event might be taking it too far.

I also think 10 events in 3 days might be pushing these athletes too far. I don't know the rest of the programming but this much volume and intensity in one weekend seems like a recipe for serious injuries.

    Just my 2 cents...

  6. Let’s Go Team CFO!!! Running with and throwing sand bags for team event one sounds like Sundays workout at the park. Ricky you have some good intuition! Let the domination begin!!!

By the way I love the Individual workout #1. Stacie if you all go at the same time on the swim get out in front fast so you don't get pulled down by other swimmers! Its much easier swimming from the front in a short sprint.

  8. It's true, Mark--this definitely gives the coastal folks an advantage. But think how embarrassed they'll be when Stacie wins it!

  10. Stacie is giong to kick some major A$$ this weekend for sure!!

And I do like having different events like tomrrow's first event but I hope they keep it to one or maybe two of these and stick with CrossFit style WODs, both metcon, oly lifting and strength, for the rest of the competition.

  12. Just had a team meeting, and a big topic was how lucky we are to have the support of such an awesome group of people in Omaha. Your energy and enthusiasm are definitely helping us fuel the fire. We're fortunate to have so many people coming out to support us in person, as well as taking time from their weekends to follow from home. You guys are the best - we couldn't ask for a better gym to represent.

  14. Almost as if they're starting with a mini-triathlon. 210 meters isn't long... I wonder if they're starting in heats or all competitors go at once? There will be a lot of bunching up so I don't see the swim being the make or break. But there is a big psych difference btwn pool swim and open water swim.
  15. Steve Says:
  16. And 65 degree water temp at 7 am will really wake you up.

  20. Did the main site wod today.

12, 9, 6, of 135# squat clean and jerks and muscle ups. Finished rx'd in 13:33. I'm happy with that since Amanda and I agreed it should have a 20 min cutoff. It was metabolic, but it seemed like more of a strength workout.

Mark, I agree with you to an extent. I thought the 1st individual wod looked awesome, but the team one I'm not so sure about. It will be tough, but it reminds me of the games 2 years ago when they had to drive a stake in the ground with a hammer. We'll see. I guess it doesn't matter since CFO is going to win no matter what...

  24. Made up yesterday's press workout. 142 (5x3).
Can't wait to watch the day 1 action! CFO!

  26. 3x5, that is.

  28. Open water swimming doesn't even compare to laps in a pool. I don't know that I'd call it unfair as it is a legitimate test of fitness. It will be interesting to watch the event unfold for sure!

Good luck team CFO and Stacie! Hard work ahead, but I know you will all kick some a$$!!

Super excited to follow the games this weekend!

  30. Addi said it best. Thanks for your shouts, advice and most of all support. We rely on you, don't kid yourself, we do. Keep it coming!

  32. LET'S GO CFO!! BANG BANG!!!
  33. Teresa Says:
  34. 1. You all are awesome. Just go out there and dominate! Think of it like swimming in 110% humidity! The tide doesn't come in till mid-morn, so you should be fine.

    2. Um yah, that's a bit of a disadvantage to landlocked kids. It's like they're trying to make it an Ironman event or put it in to a category as something they know and can market. Crappy. Next year we petition to hold the games in the Midwest during January and we make everyone run in 3 feet of snow while being pelted in the face from an ice storm.

I'll be watching all the excitement unfold! Go CFO!

Thanks For Visiting!
