Running is a skill. Just like squatting, the Olympic lifts, and tennis. Unfortunately, most runners don't see it that way. They think that to improve running, you have to run longer. They believe that once you get good at a certain distance, you must increase that distance. This couldn't be further from the truth. The injuries don't lie. You must first learn how to and then continue to improve running technique.
Where technique goes awry lies within two things seen most with runners, stopping the movement and creating leverage. Stopping the movement is like what? Think about a tire. What if all of a sudden, a stick of some sort fell in front of the tire posting it up? What would happen? Something would have to give right? This is what happens when you heel strike.
On the other hand, the longer your foot stays on the ground, the more of a lever you create with that back foot. This lever, on a forward moving organism (you), the more likely you'll face an injury. Maybe a pulled hamstring? Maybe plantar fasciitis? Maybe a whole host of other foot, knee, and hip problems.
Learn how to run, continuously improve it, and stop running slow and long and watch your running times improve and your injuries decrease considerably.
