Who Cares If I Look Stupid?

Ricky Frausto Filed Under:
CrossFit and Learning.
Someone asked me recently what all of my affiliate members have in common and I replied, “They’re all hard workers.” But I could have easily said, “They‘ve all conquered their fear of looking stupid.”

It’s difficult to learn as an adult: it requires a different mindset than when you sat in school as a child. As adults, we’re expected to know things, to be in charge, to be responsible. When you’re a kid, it’s okay to look stupid: you’re not supposed to know better. That’s why you spend so much time being taught how to do everything.

So to step forward as an adult and own up to the fact that you are not the Queen of the World (QOW, for those military types who love acronyms) and that you could use some help is a really big step. You have to be brave to join an affiliate, to offer yourself up to that kind of scrutiny. But you’re also very smart to do so: there is no quicker path to better performance than learning from the experts. Anybody can be QOW in their own garage. (I regularly reign over the dog and anyone shorter than me in my garage.) But to be QOW in your affiliate, even if it only has 20 other people, is exponentially harder.

WOD

Practice 10 minutes of a sport of your choice. It can be basketball, softball, soccer, running, swimming, biking, climbing, throwing, etc. The only stipulation is that you go as hard as you can for all 10 minutes straight. Even if you play for longer than 10 minutes you must set aside 10 minutes and try and play as hard as you can with minimal rest.

Post what you did to comments along with your story.

  2. Do drinking and barbeque-ing count as sports? Because if so, I am going above and beyond the 10 minute mark this afternoon!

  4. Looks like I missed a lot of great stuff, in and out of the gym! congrats to all of you on those deadlift numbers. that is awesome!

happy birthday and welcome back to Mel, and au revoir to Kylie--sorry to miss the night out. would've loved to throw down with everyone!

unfortunately, i have not been able to control my diet very well the last few days, but at least i spent a lot of it walking up and down steep hills with a heavy backpack. i'll be back in on tuesday ready to tear $h*! up!

  6. PS: it might interest some of you to know that i really noticed while hiking that i use my glutes and hamstrings more than i used to, especially as compared with quads. i felt like i had more power going up hills than the last time i went hiking. way more endurance, too! gpp, baby!

  8. so i'm in Springfield and it's beautiful! and i checked out the gym and it is a whole fitness center that St. John's employees get to use for free-awesome! it has everything (outdoor track, weight room with all the equipment, two huge floors of other stuff), so i have no excuse to not do every one of your workouts! ...except burpees...there's just not a place to do them anywhere in the whole place...it's very disappointing.

and...i started the zone today! this is just more proof that i will officially do anything if ricky and joe tell me it's good for me. i'll try and figure out this nutrition log thing.

this morning i did a version of the 50 workout that took me 32 minutes. miss you all already!

  14. Does scraping oil paint from a MILLION windows count as a workout? My deltoids hurt, that's for sure. Oh, and I've gone to Lowe's like 5 times today, so I got some good power walking in. And I lifted a compressor and impressed the workers at Home Depot. It's always fun in the Filewicz household. :-) See you guys tomorrow!

LAter today I got to beat on some of my best friends.

  18. Even though I've been absent, I haven't been quite as much of a lazy bum as usual. Here's my weekend workout log:
Did the mud run - FANTASTIC! Didn't run as much as Kylie and Josh, but I wasn't quite as leisurely as Josh might imply, either.
Saturday, I canoed/kayaked 7 miles on the Nishnabotna.
Then on Sunday we went to the zoo with some almost-3 year old twins (and their parents)... Chase, cajole, lift, spin - AMRAP in 3 hours.

Thanks For Visiting!
