There's no shortage of ways to determine if you're in shape.

There's the spousal reflux test: Does your husband or wife gag when you ask, "How do I look?"

Then there's Denise Austin, the fitness guru, who reduces the issue to binary logic.

She's fit; we're not.

That may be overstating the case a bit. Ms. Austin, in fact, has left some room for comparison, and recently she helped the President's Council on Physical Fitness debut a new adult fitness test.

Back Squat 1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1 reps

Time to set some new pr's. Focus on technique to move heavier loads instead of losing technique as soon as the load gets too heavy.

  2. so i think i got 153, but i dont actually know. crystal, i think we were adding wrong. reds and 10s on a regular bar are 174 is what zachr told me. today was my first day doing back squats for strength and i felt fine about it till my shoulder popped during one of my last rounds. great job 6am! you guys rocked it! good luck today

    I tried 300 and failed. It is amazing the difference 5 pounds can make. Either way I PRd by 10# so I was very happy with today.

  8. My alarm went off at 5:10 and I was pissed! I literally threw my phone across the room... I took that as a sign to skip this morning's workout.
    I like back squats so I am going to try to make it in at 4:30.

  10. I hate hate hate backsquats, I suck so bad at them - so even though my whole body feels like I blob of torn goo today, I am going to try and make the 5:30 class time bc I need to build some leg strengh badly!- - - reba....

    As for the fitness test, I can imagine worse. But a few things come to mind: 1st, how good are ms. austin's 55 pushups? 2nd, why didn't we see her 1.5 mi time? 3rd, max crunches in a minute? not very functionl! 4th, nothing in this test gives a very good reading on metabolic conditioning, am i right? i doubt a person's score on these 4 little tests would give a very good prediction of how well that person would do with a load either in a short burst (fran) or at greater length (helen, kelly).

    Today went very well...Got a PR at 285lbs. (225 was previous best) I think I could have gone 295, but Joe kicked us out of the gym. Let's see some PR's afternoon classes!!

  20. I PR'ed at 335 by 5lbs...had to fight for it, too. Saw a lot of great work at noon--DJ, you could've had a lot more than 315 if you hadn't jumped right to 365!

    At any rate, I just couldn't put up the 158lbs. Made it to 153.
    Then did 3 sets of 5 at 103lbs.
    Actually felt it in my hamstrings, so I must be doing something right.

    Way to go Paul! New PR!!! The noon class was great!

  24. since i took sunday and monday off, i did an extra work out today which totally kicked my ass. zachr saw on the website that this one girl did 20 lunges and 1 squat, 19 lunges and 2 squats, etc. i had my mp3 player as my timer and the battery died. son of the bitch! i dont know my time. what good is a work out without time?! i cannot really walk down stairs so i am limited to one floor of my house. see you guys tomorrow!

    Wasn't sure i would make it in this moring, since i woke up at 1:30am and my whole body hurt from the challenge!! I feel like my arms have been ripped off!!!

  28. i got up to 183. then i did 2 sets of 3 at 133 and 5 sets of 5 at 113. i have a feeling that i'm going to be sore tomorrow.

  30. Got to #323 today. I'm pretty sure that's a record, but I can't remember what my last 1 rep max was. I was really happy to break #300.

    A special thanks to Angela for keeping track of sets for me. If it weren't for her, I'd still be on my second set!
